Anything to encourage learning. We played a sight word game. These were the winners. Of course I had to make a BIG deal about their title. I'm hoping it will encourage others to practice their sight words at home.
We are learning so much our brains hurt. A kindergartner actually told me that this week. I guess I'm doing my job. The students loved these magnetic letters. We put them in ABC order, then we made words by sounding them out. These kids are SO smart. I know I say that a lot but they are constantly making me challenge them. That's a great problem to have. Our FIRST Flat Stanley arrived! They were very excited, especially Reese. Her Aunt Linda and Uncle Jim took Flat Stanley to Bass Pro, Dogwood Canyon, Ha Ha Tonka, and College of the Ozarks. It's not too late to send in your addresses. I present to you the SIGHT WORD KINGS and their QUEEN! Anything to encourage learning. We played a sight word game. These were the winners. Of course I had to make a BIG deal about their title. I'm hoping it will encourage others to practice their sight words at home. I had to hold back tears today, happy tears that is. Our students stuffed 64 boxes for Operation Christmas. That means 64 kids around the world will have Christmas presents. This warms my heart.

Letter recognition and letter sounds are the building blocks for reading. We still review our letters every couple days. Our favorite way to review is playing games. In this game the students draw the card of a capital letter and then find the lowercase letter that matches on their paper. Then the student has to check with their partner and color if they agree.
This is a new, harder activity that we've started doing. I try to find two of their sight words that make the beginning of a sentence. This week our words were "You are". As the student wrote the words with their partner they had to tell them a "You are" sentence. This is what I heard... "You are pretty" (giggles) "You are smart" "You are strong" "You are really fast like Flash" Good ol' shaving cream to clean the desks and practice our sight words. *This is a great Christmas present idea for me. I can never have enough shaving cream. I fail to post anything about science because I don't teach it. Mrs. Wells does and she does an AMAZING job. This week they've been discovering animals, specifically pets. This past week was Red Ribbon Week. We had fun dressing up and decorating our door. We HAD to include Pete the Cat. You're looking at the door contest WINNER!! Our reward=ICE CREAM PARTY! Shapes, shapes, shapes. I absolutely LOVE geoboards. Maybe I'm a dork, but I think there are so many possibilities with them. Instead of worksheets we created our own shapes. Veteran's DayOur Veteran's Day celebration was a great reminder for our kiddos. They all had stories about a family member in the military. I loved hearing them all. Even though it was snowy and slick there were still 22 veterans that attended.
I was informed, by the kids, the day before Halloween that our room needed decorations. We made candy corn and strung them all over our room. It might have been last minutes but we were very festive. Spider Hoop Toss was FUN! We balanced eyeballs on spoons and had to hand off to our partner. There were lots of bouncing eyeballs on the gym floor. We decorated our own pumpkins. Each one was very unique. THANK YOU to the Mom's and Dad that helped!!
